About
Unitree R1-A5 Smart D
Fixed-Base Dual-Arm Humanoid Robot with BrainCo Revo 2 Basic 5-Finger Anthropomorphic Hands & Wrist RGB Cameras. 13 DOF, Orin Nano 40 TOPS, human-like grasping, binocular vision & full-stack open SDK. For anthropomorphic manipulation research.
What's in This Configuration
The R1-A5 Smart D introduces BrainCo Revo 2 Basic five-finger anthropomorphic hands — the first configuration in the R1-A5 lineup to replicate true human hand morphology. Each hand features five independently actuated fingers with a wrist-mounted RGB camera, enabling research in human-like grasping, tool use, sign language, and dexterous in-hand manipulation that demands the full complement of human digits.
BrainCo Revo 2 Basic — Five Fingers, Human Form
The BrainCo Revo 2 Basic is a research-grade five-finger anthropomorphic hand that mirrors human hand anatomy. Each finger operates independently with multiple joints, enabling power grasps, precision pinches, lateral grips, and in-hand manipulation of objects designed for human hands. This is the configuration of choice for researchers studying human-like dexterity, tool use, sign language generation, and anthropomorphic robot design — domains where fewer fingers or simpler grippers are fundamentally limiting.
Anthropomorphic Grasping — Built for Human Tools
Smart D is the first R1-A5 configuration to unlock true anthropomorphic manipulation. The five-finger Revo 2 Basic hands can operate screwdrivers, grip pens, turn knobs, press buttons, and handle objects designed exclusively for human hands. Combined with wrist RGB cameras for close-up visual feedback and the Orin Nano 40 TOPS for real-time hand tracking and grasp planning, Smart D bridges the gap between industrial grippers and human-level dexterity.
Orin Nano 40 TOPS — AI Compute for Hand Tracking & Grasp Planning
The built-in NVIDIA Jetson Orin Nano delivers 40 TOPS of AI compute, handling simultaneous streams from head binocular vision and both wrist RGB cameras. Run hand pose estimation, grasp planning networks, and reinforcement learning policies for five-finger control locally with sub-millisecond latency. No external GPU server, no cloud dependency — just plug in power and start training.
Binocular Vision & Multi-Camera Perception
A binocular camera head delivers a 146° × 124° field of view with a 60 mm stereo baseline for scene-level understanding. RGB streams at 1280×720@30 Hz and depth at 544×448@10 Hz. Combined with the wrist RGB cameras on each BrainCo Revo 2 Basic hand, the R1-A5 Smart D offers a complete multi-camera perception stack for research in hand-eye coordination, active perception, and anthropomorphic manipulation.
Voice Collaboration & Natural Interaction
Four-array beamforming microphones and dual 3 W speakers enable clear voice capture and synthesis in noisy labs or classrooms. The open audio framework supports custom wake words, multilingual TTS, and integration with LLMs for conversational command-and-control.
Compact. Lightweight. Desk-Ready.
At just 700 × 357 × 190 mm and approximately 11 kg, the R1-A5 Smart D fits on a standard lab bench or classroom desk. The fixed-base design eliminates footprint concerns while delivering full upper-body humanoid kinematics with five-finger dexterity. Power via the included external supply — an optional upper-body Li-ion battery is available for ~1.5 hours of untethered operation.
Full-Stack Open Development
Unitree provides a mature, Linux-based robot development framework with open APIs for the underlying system, robotic arms, audio, lighting, and visual control. ROS 2 native support, dual encoders on every arm joint, and hollow internal wiring make the R1-A5 Smart D a clean slate for reinforcement learning, teleoperation research, embodied AI, and anthropomorphic manipulation studies. The built-in Orin Nano 40 TOPS handles model training and inference for five-finger control without external hardware.
Upgrade Path — Grow With Your Research
Start with Smart D and expand as your projects evolve. The R1-A5 platform is fully modular:
- End Effectors — Upgrade to BrainCo Revo 2 Tactile for force-sensitive five-finger grasping, or LinkerBot Hand O6 for 6-DOF dexterity with or without tactile feedback.
- Upper-Body Battery — Add the Li-ion battery pack for ~1.5 hours of cord-free operation.
- Mobile Base — Upgrade to the R1-A5-D platform with wheeled autonomous chassis, LiDAR, and expanded workspace.
